Jesus made Himself of no reputation and even came to earth in the form of a human. And because Jesus obeyed God, HE was given a name that is above all names. (Philippians 2)
Before we are born again we want to have a big reputation and we even work to achieve such.
After we are born again, we begin learning to control ourselves and we learn not to allow our flesh to rule over us.
Every time we do the word of God we are recreated in the image of Christ.
It is a continual process as long as we live on this present earth.

Philippians 2
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
(Jesus who was God, took on the form of a human, and didn't think he had to be equal with God.)
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name:

The work of the flesh to glorify itself is called "emulations" in the Bible.
Galatians 5
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft (living in superstitions), hatred, variance (arguing), emulations (exalting yourself above others), wrath (wanting to see people punished), strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Matthew 7 Jesus says
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Controlling your own flesh by the Word of God and by prayer.
Colossians 3
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

When we feel our flesh about to rise up to exalt itself, we can pray, "God, please don't let me say that!"
God will help us to control our flesh.
